This is one of the few masses of gabbro in Ireland. Gabbro is
chemically identical to basalt: the only difference is that it much more coarsely
crystalline. This is because unlike basalt it has cooled slowly at depth.
Slieve Foye or Carlingford Mountain. Lower part of mountain is Silurian sediment.
Above this is Carboniferous conglomerate. The summit (photo) is Palaeogene
gabbro
